Pre-Appointment instructions for Botox, Dermal and Lip Filler

The week leading up to your treatment:

Try to avoid over-the-counter blood thinners including :

  • Aspirin
  • Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve and other NSAIDs as much as possible.

Also try to avoid herbal supplements, including:

  • garlic
  • vitamin E
  • Ginkgo Biloba
  • St. John’s wort
  • Fish oil / Omega-3 capsules.

Avoiding these medications and supplements will help prevent bruising after your dermal and lip filler or botox treatment is complete.

Limit alcohol intake 24 hours prior to treatment

WARNING:

*If you take any of the above-stated medications or supplements as directed by a medical provider, ABSOLUTELY DO NOT DISCONTINUE USE of any medication or supplement before consulting with your provider first.*

If you take prescription blood thinners you have a higher risk of bruising and bleeding when it comes to doing dermal and lip filler or botox injections.  It is recommended you consult with your physician if you are unsure or have questions about treatment.

Day of Treatment

Please try to make sure your face is clean and come to the office without having applied any makeup.

If you like, you can bring makeup to apply after the treatment.

Filler and Lidocaine allergies

If you are booking an appointment for dermal and lip filler and have an allergy to LIDOCAINE, please note that ahead of time.

Non-lidocaine options are possible but only by request and special order at this time.

POST Appointment instructions

After receiving neurotoxin:

  • No rubbing or massaging of the injected area for at least 24 hours after treatment, including facials.

  • No strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, or elevated heart rate due to activity for 24 hours after treatment.

  • Keep upright for 4 hours — no napping

  • Avoid headwear that is tightly fitted across the forehead

  • Avoid excessive alcohol

Remember it can take as little as 3-5 days to start seeing your Botox results but can also take up to 14 days. This is all completely normal!

After receiving dermal fillers:

It takes about 48 hours for dermal and lip filler products to really set up so try to relax as much as possible.

Avoid for 24 hours:

  • No makeup
  • No skincare
  • No rubbing or massaging the area unless directed by your injector

Avoid for 48 hours:

  • Extreme cold/heat
  • Massage / rubbing of the area unless directed by your injector
  • Exercise / elevated heart rate – can cause extensive bruising
  • Try not to sleep on the area if possible

Avoid for 2 weeks:

  • facials,
  • facial waxing
  • Glycolic or AHA peels
  • IPL or energy-based treatments
  • microdermabrasion

No dental work for at least 2 weeks  including routine cleanings

  • It is suggested you inform your dentist about filler you have had

Expected Swelling of the LIPS:

 You may notice:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Red needle puncture marks
  • Asymmetry
  • Tenderness
  • Pain
  • Itching in the area
  • A  larger upper lip compared with the lower lip, projection increase of the upper lip
  • Swelling in the philtrum, the skin-colored area between the nose and  the upper pink lip

These things are all temporary.

After dermal and lip filler, swelling is typical and expected.  This is NOT how your lips will remain or look for the end result. Much of the swelling will improve within 2-3 days.

The time that it takes to settle lips after filler is approximately 4 weeks, this is when you can truly see the "final result".

Always contact your nurse injector if you have concerns!

What to do for swelling:

  • Apply Ice – While it’s not recommended that clients put much pressure on their dermal and lip filler sites, gently applying ice to the treated areas can help reduce swelling.

  • Take acetaminophen/ Tylenol to reduce pain as necessary. We do not recommend Ibuprofen or other NSAIDS as they can increase bruising.

  • Arnica + Bromelain tablets are both natural supplements to reduce bruising. Available over the counter at your local pharmacy

Contact your Nurse Injector:

After receiving dermal filler or lip filler, If you have:

  • abnormal increase in redness
  • abnormal increase in tenderness
  • abnormal increase in swelling
  • abnormal increase in pain
  • abnormal discoloration (dusky, blue/grey) or blanching
  • abnormal coolness or heat
  • nodules and/or pus.

If you are at all concerned for any reason contact your nurse injector immediately.

Be prepared to send a photo/video, and your nurse injector may require a facetime call to see firsthand what you are experiencing.

In the event that you are unable to reach your nurse injector, call your doctor or seek out emergency medical treatment.

It is always better to err on the side of caution!
